Rule of Thirds

The rule of thirds is one of the most basic concepts in cinematography that will improve your composition skills tremendously.  The screen is divided up horizontally and vertically by lines that form a tic tac toe board.  Key, important elements in the picture should fall on those lines and preferably where those lines intersect.  By placing important information on those points, the picture will be much more pleasing and interesting for the viewer.
